Today, Kristen Faulkner, who quit her job as a venture capitalist in 2021 to pursue cycling, became the first American woman to win gold in the Olympic cycling road race since Connie Carpenter-Phinney did it in the inaugural 1984 race. Like Faulkner, Carpenter-Phinney had a unique road to gold. I got to tell Carpenter-Phinney’s story in my second of two USA TODAY pieces published a few weeks ago. Check it out below! https://lnkd.in/gWnXgFpA

🥇 Jasmine Paris became the first woman to complete one of the world's toughest races this weekend, The Barkley Marathon. 😤 Only 20 people have ever finished it, since it was extended to 100 miles in 1989. Mostly the news every year is, no one completed it. It is a race of legend in running circles. 💡What does this mean for us, on a day to day? 🏔 Whatever mountain you're climbing, whatever challenge you have in front of you, on the other side of hard, is where you find growth. 📈 On a performance curve, that doesn't mean having to push ourselves to strain every day. But moving out of your comfort zone, to stretch, that is where magic can happen for you. ⬆ It will also grow your comfort zone, so you can keep climbing new mountains. #peakperformance #stretchyourself https://lnkd.in/e_HdXrpU

Last week, I found a new hero.🌟 Jasmin Paris just became the first woman to ever complete the Barkley Marathons. With less than 2 minutes until cutoff time, Jasmin made history in the race’s 38th year.🏔️ If you've never heard of Barkley Marathons, this feat is nothing to scoff at. This 100 mile race with an elevation gain equal to climbing Mount Everest *twice* has only been completed by 20 people since it began. But even more impressive: Jasmin’s perseverance.Yeah, she ran 100 miles within the 60 hour cutoff time. That in itself takes an inner strength most of us can’t begin to comprehend.☝ But this wasn’t Jasmin’s first time competing in Barkley. This wasn’t even her second. Jasmin returned to this race THREE times before she overcame her limits at Barkley.Think about that - she attempted to run a 100 mile race three times. Jasmin returned to her own version of Everest time and time again until she overcame her limits. We each have our own version of Everest, our own Barkley Marathons. There’s a finite number of times you have to pick yourself up and try again before you overcome whatever's standing in your way. The exact count remains unknown until you surpass it.How many times are you willing to continue to show up for yourself to push past your limits?🔗 Link to Jasmin’s incredible story below. And if you haven’t heard of this race, take a few minutes to look up the history, insane rules and traditions, and weird connection to James Earl Ray. It’s a crazy story in its own right.#WomensHistoryMonth https://lnkd.in/eYDW8mUe

In this interesting article by World of Show Jumping on USA Show Jumping Athlete Cathleen Driscoll, she shared her perspective on team ownership and athlete backing in the US:"I find the owners in the US prefer to back men. I don't know why but I think it's much easier for male riders to get owners and if you have a great team owner behind you and you can have a strong string of horses, you can move up on the ranking list, get into bigger shows, and get better opportunities. I think we are lacking good owners especially for female riders. I think it's harder for us to get owners and it really shouldn't be. I think we are missing out on a lot of talent that just needs opportunity." Despite show jumping sport having exceptional growth similar to the growth now seen in Formula One in regard to investment in elite level competitions, tours, venues, major sponsorship, broadcasting, endorsem*nts, and media deals, Driscoll's statements still ring true. There is a definite lack of diversity among the athletes at the highest level of show jumping sport and a lack of investment into women riders and riders of color resulting in much talent going undiscovered. Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity to help change this continued trajectory.https://lnkd.in/gXKe_iTp

Did you know there are over 100 Cranksgiving rides held internationally every year? Cranksgiving is a true cycling holiday - it's an unusual one too. Grassroots organizers flip the script on the traditional consumerist zeitgeist. The cycling community 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠 𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 to those less fortunate by riding (or racing) to help fill their local food bank shelves.Learn more about Cranksgiving and how you can host your own at: cranksgiving.org

Only 20 people have ever made it to the end of the #BarkleyMarathon since it was extended to 100 miles in 1986, this year Jasmin Paris was the first woman in history to finish it.But what makes this race special? How to enter is shrouded in mystery, as there is no website or social media for the event. All that is known is that to enter a runner must- write a motivational letter to Lazarus (founder and inventor of the race) ✍️- if you are selected among the 40 participants you have to pay $1.60 💰- if you are a first time participant you have to bring a number plate from your home country 🚗- if you are a veteran you must bring a packet of cigarettes as a gift 🚬The race consists of a 160 km route divided into 5 laps and 18,000 metres of elevation gain, to be completed in 60 hours. ⏱️No mobile phones or GPS equipment may be used, only a map and a digital watch. To prove the completion of each lap, the runner must tear out a page from each book scattered at various points along the route. It is extremely motivating and inspiring to see these examples of success, of how much people want to test themselves and take risks, especially in a sporting enviroment where it is increasingly difficult to emerge as a professional, especially in sports that struggle to find the space they deserve in the media and beyond. Jasmin's goal, reached 39 seconds before the cut-off time, makes us reflect on how 'no one has ever done it before' with the right approach and preparation can turn into a success story, opening the door to others, who probably would never have existed without this feat.#sportmaketheworldbetter

British cycling coach, Dave Brailsford, took on a task in 2010 of winning the Tour de France. No Brit had ever won before. His approach - “aggregation of marginal gains.” By improving 1% at everything he was doing (especially the things every other team was overlooking), he believed he could win.His goal was to win the race in just 5 years, but he missed his projections. He ended up winning in just 3 years. This can work for you in two ways.A) what can you do to improve yourself and your business marginally every day? - generating more awareness - starting your process flow charts- improving your team morale B) how can you help your customers realize their 1% goals and help them develop a measurable and specific plan to achieve their marginal gains.Post inspired by Jordan Regas thank you for the Cadence book. It’s fantastic!

runbritain organise a few races both on, and off road, and it is not that I enter many, but this race local to me and is known as 'The Beacon race' and in my opinion, really should be more widely known. Itching to get back to running for a while now after various distractions got the better or me, finally today I signed up for the 66th Beacon race in October. Also inspired by Jamal Benmiloud and his upcoming Marathon to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer, and also friends at @Herefordrowingclub who will be taking part in the London to Brighton bike ride I just pressed the button! Now I'm not intending to give the impression that everyone is running or cycling this Autumn, but many are, and whilst saying "yes"sometimes is great. It is also fine at other times to allow others to enjoy the journey. This is one of the themes covered in my blog post (published today on my website https://lnkd.in/ef9RsgiE) that primarily looks at What to do, IF you've not quite got enough training time in? I know; it might sound like a lame excuse? BUT this does happen to pretty much everyone who isn't an elite professional Athlete. Anyway, my suggestions cover a brief introduction to Negative splits, Sports Nutrition and how information really is the key to motivation so often. Shoutout to Strava, which makes such a positive contribution here alongside as I've posted previously Apple Watch. Final note: I'm the second runner in this picture from 2017 and was very happy to end up being the first female to cross the finish line. Not so sure with my lack of running specific training how it will go this time, but looking forward to joining in with this great local event all the same! Of course some of my workout films over the coming weeks may now be running biased in the coming weeks, but feel free to message, if you've got any events you'd like to find a way to finish at better to send me your questions or queries. Or if you just fancy joining this specatular race on the Malvern Hills, go to the runbritain website and enter online.#negativesplit #trainingschedule #runninggoals #malvernhills #beaconrace
