When it comes to party-type foods, sliders almost always make an appearance in our house. You just can’t go wrong with them – especially when they are as good as these.

The Essential Air Fryer Cookbook for Two

I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for ways I can put a delicious homemade meal on the table quickly.

Less time in the kitchen & more time with my family is always my priority.

To make sure I have everything I need, I like to stop at Walmart to pick up all my ingredients, including Eckrich Deli Meats, which are now available at the Walmart deli counter!

These sliders are so simple to make. When preparing them for the kids to have for breakfast, I like to make a full batch & then individually wrap them after they have cooled.

This makes it easy for the kids to grab them on the go as they need them.

This recipe makes 12 sliders, so that gives me almost a whole week of breakfasts for them!

Here are some commonly asked questions…

Why choose Eckrich deli meat?

Any way you slice it, Eckrich deli meat is my top choice at the deli counter.

Not only is it convenient because I can grab it while I’m at Walmart during my weekly shopping trip, but Eckrich is always gluten-free, full of flavor & made with unmatched quality.

The Eckrich Ham Off the Bone gets its premium flavor from its own natural juices, getting all the delicious flavor of bone-in meat.

Can ham and cheese sliders be made ahead of time?

Absolutely. As I mentioned, we like to bake them all at once & then portion them out. You can enjoy them cold the next day or just give them a few seconds in the microwave to reheat them if you are short on time.

So simple & still just as delicious the next day.

How to store leftover sliders

If you happen to have any of these sliders left over after serving – you can either cover the baking dish with foil or plastic wrap OR transfer the remaining sliders to an airtight container.

Keep them refrigerated until ready to serve again. To reheat – microwave for about 30-60 seconds or until hot again. Don’t overheat them though- the bread will get hard and undesirable.

What to serve with these sliders

Gameday snacks are what we do best – so the list is long for the recipes that we like to serve alongside these little gems. But here is a shortlist of the recipes that ALWAYS make an appearance with these sliders.

  • Garlic Parmesan Pasta Chips
  • Veggie Dip
  • Instant Pot BBQ Smokies
  • Baked Parmesan Ravioli
  • Homemade Potato Chips
  • Sausage Cheese Dip
  • 20-Minute Pepper Jelly Meatballs
Poppy Seed Ham and Cheese Sliders (10)

Can these be made without the poppy seeds?

Yes – of course. If you’d like to omit the poppy seeds just leave them out of the buttery mix. No problem with that – but they do add great texture so I highly recommend making them with them at least the first time.

Poppy Seed Ham and Cheese Sliders (11)

Can these be made with another type of roll?

We like to use Hawaiian rolls because of their texture, density, and flavor. The sweetness really compliments the ham.

While you can use another type of dinner roll, you will need something that won’t fall apart when you add the butter over the top and will still be sturdy enough to pull apart after baking too.

Poppy Seed Ham and Cheese Sliders (12)

Would you be able to transport these in a crock pot to keep warm?

I don’t advise using a slow cooker to transport because it will slowly continue to cook the bread, resulting in the bottoms of the sliders being tough to chew.

I highly recommend using something like this Wonderbagthat can keep the food hot for up to 12 hours.

HOW DO YOU MAKE HAM AND CHEESE SLIDERS?

  1. Lightly coat a 9×13 inch dish with cooking spray.
  2. Cut the slider buns in half like a sandwich.
  3. Place the bottom layer into the prepared dish.
  4. Add half of the cheese.
  5. Follow with a layer of ham, then the remaining cheese.
  6. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter.
  7. Whisk in brown sugar, dijon, poppy seeds, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire, salt & pepper.
  8. Brush this mixture over the tops of the rolls.
  9. Pour any remaining mixture to coat thoroughly.
  10. Cover with aluminum foil.
  11. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes.
  12. Remove the foil & continue baking for an additional 10 minutes.

Can you prepare these and wait to bake? Or does the bread get too soggy?

I would prepare the sliders up to the point of pouring on the sauce. Just mix it & then keep it refrigerated until you are ready to make them. Then pour it on right before you bake.

Any suggestions how to make these in bulk and keep warm? For example, an outdoor graduation party.
    Thank you!

You might have to keep them in the oven on warm until ready to serve. Also might try a slow cooker – you’d have to separate them – place parchment between the layers, and keep on warm. I don’t know how the bread will perform doing this as I have never tried it. But please let me know how it goes. I’d love to know.

I have made these in bulk and been able to keep them warm a couple of ways. 1. Bake right before you’re either about to leave or going to be serving. 2. Make sure you bake them in a pan that has an accompanying lid. 3. Put foil back on immediately after removing from the oven, then put container lid on top of that. 4. Put in to an insulated casserole warming carrier and don’t open it until you are ready to serve. Mine is a double carrier and it actually helps keep them even warmer because the two trays create more heat in the insulated carrier. I served them from inside the carrier as well. Once one tray was gone I opened up the second one.

Any other ideas to keep warm without bread going hard or soggy? Want to make ahead for graduation party.

    • Gina Kleinworth says

Poppy Seed Ham and Cheese Sliders (32)
You could remove them from the baking dish and place them in a slow cooker lined with paper towels. Make sure to keep it on warm so it doesn’t get too hot. Also, cover the tops of them with a paper towel – this will help absorb moisture that could develop. But overall- they will be best when enjoyed as close to when they are finished baking so I encourage you to not wait too long.

I’ve made these before and they are awesome. I can’t recall if I use salted or unsalted butter. Does it matter? Thanks

It’s a personal preference. We like things more salted here – so we almost always use salted. But you can use what you prefer. Keep in mind the seasonings being added and the fact that ham and certain cheeses are naturally salty too.

I made these and did fine till I uncovered and set timer for 10 minutes. I should have watched them, they came out extra dark. I also think next time I will only use 1/2 stick of butter. They were way too wet. Had a great taste and I will cook again with tweaks.

What do you think these would taste like if I used mini croissants? I have 60 small croissants I need to use or freeze. I’ve made this recipe many times and ALWAYS a huge hit! Pairing it with Rudy’s Creamed Corn & Calico Beans. I don’t want to ruin a good thing, but hey… save me some mullah!

I think the idea is great – I have never tried it. My biggest concern would be how the croissants perform when coated with the butter sauce do they get soggy, or maybe too tough when baked. But it couldn’t hurt to give it a try. Please let me know how it turns out.
